Welcome to the Duke-NUS Medical School self-review

Duke-NUS Medical School is preparing for an upcoming Medical School Evaluation Team (MSET) site visit scheduled from 22 April to 24 April 2024. The purpose of the MSET site visit is to explore Duke-NUS’ self-review of our practices against the National Standards for Basic Medical Education. This is part of Singapore’s efforts to promote continuous quality improvement in all of its medical schools.

For more than a year, the Department of Quality Assurance & Accreditation has been working on the self-review which we refer to as “ACE 2024: Promoting Accountability, Engaging Community & Pursuing Excellence”.

We see the self-review process as an excellent opportunity to engage stakeholders and critically reflect on our practices and overall ability to meet the mission of the School.

What is the history of self-review in Singapore’s medical schools?

In 2018 prompted by a changing healthcare landscape, the Singapore Ministry of Health developed the National Standards for Basic Medical Education (“National Standards”) and the National Outcomes Framework for Medical Graduates (“National Outcomes”) to ensure that as medical schools expand in Singapore, they educate safe and capable doctors prepared for clinical practice. These documents set out the roadmap for Singapore’s medical schools to reach and maintain high standards. Later, the National Quality Improvement (QI) / Quality Assurance (QA) Framework was established to provide the mechanism for overseeing each school’s self-review process.

Who participated in the self-review process?

A successful self-review process depends on the effort of the entire medical school community. Faculty, staff and student engagement is critical to the success of this process. More than 100 faculty, staff and students have participated in the self-review led by various workgroups. Participants provided valuable reflections on our strengths and important feedback on how we can continue to improve as a medical school.

What’s next in our journey?

As we conducted our self-review and identified opportunities for improvement, we have simultaneously been creating plans to address those opportunities. Now, after the site visit, we will receive feedback from the Ministry of Health on our review and plans. We will communicate the Ministry’s feedback to all of our stakeholders and continue our journey towards becoming the BEST at getting BETTER!
